Kenneth Branagh’s depiction of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was the first cinematic attempt that remained pretty faithful to the source material with few changes for artistic license. The 1994 movie focused more on the dysfunctional relationships of the characters rather than the fringe science and Victor’s monstrous creation.
In this scene Victor is wracked with conflicting emotions telling Elizabeth, the love of his life that he is frightened she will leave him if he reveals what he has been doing. She in turn says that he will lose her anyway if he cannot be honest with her, and asks him to tell all and marry her.
This expressive theme was written before the start of shooting on the movie, and is typical of Patrick Doyle’s romantic style. It is further developed later on in the film culminating in The Wedding Night at its melodramatic pinnacle.
