It’s the year 2000 and the scene is the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). Microsoft, a household name for its computer operating system Windows and office-based software is about to reveal the videogame that will be the face of its new Xbox games console, Halo: Combat Evolved.
Twenty years on, Halo and the Master Chief have become cultural icons, with spin-off books, anime, a streaming series and even appearances in other videogame franchises.
Despite being an early “first look” at the game, Martin O’Donnell’s music is present in the original E3 reveal trailer. As immediately identifiable as the Master Chief’s Mjolnir armour, the quasi plainchant opening transports us back to the mysterious halo ring, urging us to “finish the fight”!
