1986’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home holds a curious place in the original movie run’s pantheon, owing to the fact that it is many Star Trek fan’s least favourite installment in the franchise, whilst being one of the most financially successful. With a more up-beat and comedic tone, after the darker trajectory the previous movies had been taking, and the setting of “modern day” San Francisco, the tonal shift was not only felt on screen but in Leonard Rosenman’s score as well. Originally containing a more complete statement of Alexander Courage’s theme from the original TV series, this revised version of the Main Title is the one heard in the movie. Along with Jerry Goldsmith’s score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Voyage Home is the only other entry in the Star Trek franchise to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Score.
